You may have noticed that the icons clash with each other in the taskbar. No need to deal with such clashing icons any more. Let us learn how to create new taskbar icons.

First right-click on the icons to open the jumplist. You can also do it by clicking and dragging the icons. Next, right-click on program icon. It is located at the bottom of the jumplist. There you have to chose ‘Properties’ for changing the icons. The change is done but it may not show immediately.

You can also do the same by following this step. You need to open the folder – %appdata%/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Quick Launch/User Pinned/Taskbar in Explorer address bar.

All the icons will be displayed here. You need to select those and copy to another folder. In the new folder, just right-click and select ‘Properties’.

If it does not opens of its own, select the ‘Shortcut’ tab. Then click on ‘Browse’. This will help you to find new icons.

Here you can switch on to any of the given icons. Those are in several extensions such as .ico, .dll. or .exe files. It has been seen that .ico files give harmonious look. Click ‘Ok’ to save the changes.

You need to do the same exercise with all the taskbar icons.

Few may not work this way like those of Office apps icons. For those you need to create a new shortcut. Now, in the dialog you need to give the path to the application that you need. Finish the wizard by clicking ‘Next’. Customize the news shortcut as you had done for the other icons.

Last, you need to unpin all the existing shortcuts from the taskbar. To do this you need to right-click on the icons or just click and drag those to open its jumplist. Now select the ‘Unpin this program from taskbar’.

Almost done. Drag now the new icons to the taskbar and then line them up according to your choice. It is done and the changes will be reflected in few moments.

Thanks for this post. I’ve often wondered how to change the icons on the Windows 7 super bar but wasn’t able to find a way. I’ve tried the first option in your instructions and it worked like a charm.
